My utility’s peak hours are 2 PM to 7 PM. The rate is 30¢ per kilowatt-hour. Off-peak is 10¢. The difference is 20¢. Every kilowatt-hour I can shift from peak to off-peak saves me 20¢. But I cannot shift my AC. I work from home two days a week. On those days, I need AC during peak. On the other days, I am at work. My AC is set to 78°F during peak. That equals already low. If you have solar, the battery math changes. Under net billing, you export excess solar at 3¢ and buy back at 20¢. A battery lets you store your solar and use it later. Instead of exporting at 3¢, you save 20¢. That means a 17¢ difference. Much better than the 20¢ peak shaving difference. The numbers on solar plus battery. My solar system generates 9,150 kWh a year. I use 6,000 kWh directly. I export 3,150 kWh at 3¢, earning $94.50. I buy 3,000 kWh at 20¢, costing $600. Net cost $505.50. With a 10 kWh battery, I can store 3,150 kWh instead of exporting it.
